Pasaporte, DNI and TIE in Spain

We advise you on all Spanish identification and residency documents so your paperwork is done correctly the first time.

Identification Documents in Spain

If you live in Spain, holding a valid identity document is mandatory for any legal procedure. The two main documents for Spanish nationals are the Pasaporte and the DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad). If you are a foreign resident, you will also need to obtain the TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero).

Pasaporte in Spain: How to Apply and Requirements

The Pasaporte is the official document that allows you to travel outside your country and prove your identity internationally. Spanish citizens need a valid Pasaporte to travel outside the European Union.

Requirements to obtain a Spanish Pasaporte:

  • Valid DNI
  • Recent passport-size photograph
  • Payment of the official fee
  • Previous Pasaporte (in some cases)

The application must be submitted in person at a Policía Nacional office with a prior appointment.

DNI: What It Is and How to Apply

The DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad) is the mandatory official identity document for Spanish citizens. It is required for:

  • Voting
  • Opening bank accounts
  • Signing contracts
  • Accessing public healthcare
  • Filing taxes
  • Any administrative procedure in Spain

Applying for a DNI for the First Time

Requirements to obtain a DNI in Spain:

  • Full birth certificate
  • Up-to-date certificate of municipal registration (empadronamiento)
  • Recent photograph
  • Payment of the official fee
  • Document proving Spanish nationality (if acquired by naturalisation)

The procedure is carried out at a Policía Nacional office with a prior appointment.

Renewing Your DNI

The DNI must be renewed every:

  • 5 years — for those under 30
  • 10 years — for those aged 30 to 70
  • Permanently valid — for those over 70

For renewal you will need your previous DNI, an updated photograph if your appearance has changed, and payment of the fee.

What Is the TIE and Who Needs It?

Foreign residents in Spain cannot obtain a DNI. Instead, they receive the TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero), which certifies their legal status in Spain. The TIE is mandatory for non-EU nationals and is required to:

  • Work legally in Spain
  • Access public healthcare
  • Open a bank account
  • Sign contracts
  • Identify yourself before authorities
